Preparatory

Preparatory school welcomes pupils in Years 3 to 8 (ages 7-13) with lessons taking place across the main school and our eco-friendly, state-of-the-art Copenhagen building. The learning environment is well equipped with internet linked classrooms and interactive whiteboards throughout.

A robust, balanced curriculum

Our highly qualified and experienced teaching staff are motivated to ensure pupils benefit from a wide variety of educational experiences as part of a well-rounded, stimulating and balanced curriculum. Their collective qualities and ability to interact and engage with pupils on their level create the most enjoyable school learning experience.

Preparatory School has a broad curriculum that balances traditional and modern learning techniques. In Year 3, the class form tutor teaches all core academic subjects.

From Year 4 upwards, children benefit from specialist teachers across a weekly timetable covering:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Religious Education
  • French
  • Latin/Classics
  • Music
  • Art
  • Drama
  • Reasoning
  • Sport (including swimming lessons)

Staff in all subject areas deliver challenges to match the varying ability levels of pupils who respond enthusiastically to realistic levels of expectation. Pupils also learn to challenge themselves by participating in a wide range of extra-curricular activities.

Fun, stimulating extra-curricular activities

Extra-curricular activities for Preparatory School pupils include a range of sports  and after-school clubs. We organise regular sporting fixtures with other local preparatory schools appropriate to each year group. After-school activities cater for a range of interests including gymnastics, art, cookery and chess.

Senior pupils take part in our Adventure, Leadership & Service (ALS) programme, designed to challenge pupils and broaden their horizons away from the classroom. It’s a unique programme, which is key to developing important life skills, shaping pupils into well-rounded young adults, and preparing them for senior school.

Preparing children and families for their next step

At the start of Year 5, we invite parents to attend an information session with the Headmaster, Director of Studies, and Registrar to explore options for their child’s senior education. Every family is fully supported and prepared for the next stage of their studies.

We have a proud record of outstanding results and pupils attaining scholarships at senior schools. After Preparatory school, most pupils move on to independent senior or boarding schools and continue building on the strong foundations created at Wellesley Prep.
