Adventure, Leadership & Service

Extra-curricular activities play an important part in our 13+ curriculum. In-keeping with our school ethos, we foster a spirit of adventure and team-spirit and are always striving to develop our pupils’ leadership potential.

One afternoon a week, our senior pupils embark upon their ALS programme of activities. These aim to stretch the children to their limits and broaden their horizons. The adventure strand exposes the children to a less conventional world of sport. They complete levels on the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme, become certified in Kayaking and Sailing, row on the River Thames, and go extreme with indoor skiing and skydiving. Their leadership skills are fostered subtly through orienteering, problem solving and bush craft sessions and more overtly with guest speakers leading group work sessions on topics such as ‘extremism’, ‘image in the media’ and ‘cyber bullying’. The final strand; service, is tapped into via planned sessions with our younger pupils (e.g. reading in the Pre-Prep) or through visits out of school, such as carol singing at a local care home or by becoming teaching assistants at a local school for disabled children.

We believe we offer an unrivalled, dynamic leadership and personal development programme, designed to challenge pupils outside of the classroom through controlled exposure to risk and learning for life. ALS is undoubtedly a key component in the development of such rounded, empathetic, courageous, healthy and worldly young adults.
